Playing our interpretations of the highly popular, Jazz and Swing

Seeing all these wonderful food programmes and the TV Chefs that create the dishes reminds me of the time we were hired by the BBC to play at Brian Turners Restaurant at the NEC Plaza in Birmingham. We were told it was just to play for an hour for a few guests before their meal and something to do with celebrating 15 years of the Good Food magazine. Well we don't mind that at all, and as well as getting paid we got fed which is always a bonus. Anyway we arrived nice and early and made sure everything was set up before retiring to the bar, as you do. After what seemed like a very long time at said bar, we were requested to start playing as the guests would be arriving in a few minutes.
So in we go keeping things low key as there are only one or two people in the room. As we look up at the end of the first song we suddenly see a roomfull of TV Chefs, - Ainsley Harriot, Anthony Worral Thomson, Gary Rhodes (or was it Nigel Kennedy?) Oz Clarke, James Martin, Rick Stein...all good fun.
Last night we went to see Flight 505, a great Rhythm and Blues band Made a nice change...
Off to the Horseshoe tonight. We try to get to the here most Thursdays. Maybe sing a few numbers. There aren't to many Jazz venues like this these days. The 'Shoe is in Church Lawton, Cheshire and regularly sees British Jazz legends such as George Galway, Tom Kincaid, Don Wright, Terry Brunt, Dave Mott, Brian Smith, the list goes on...
The pub was packed, standing room only. The line up was Pete Robinson - Guitar, Dave Mott - Sax, Billy Edwards - Trumpet, Nigel Cartwright - Bass, Roger Keay / Jack Cotterill - Drums. Jack is only 14 and showing all the signs of becoming a great drummer like his late Grandad, Pete.
Not the slightest whiff of Jazz, but what a great weekend. Farmer Phils is a music festival not to be missed. Farmer Phil is a rock and blues music loving Farmer who tells you to geddon his land at this time every year, not geddof it. Set in the Shropshire hills, on the Long Mind in Ratlinghope, it is far more accessible and friendly than any of your Glastonbury's or Downloads. Even without the bands, it's a great 3 day camping break with your mates. What makes it better is the price of 30 quid for all the bands and camping and Draft Guinness and Happy Days real ale for 2.50 a pint! The best band for my money was Blue Horses, playing Celtic Rock at its finest. Liz Prendergast can certainly play that fiddle. John Otway was giving it large as usual climbing up a ladder then falling off. I wonder if he can get insured? Another band that caught my ears was Splitter, a ska band from Leicester. (Babylon Rocks). We played a small set in the acoustic tent, with like minded friends, Lora Bethan - vocals, Paul Rossiter - Guitar and vocals, Metal Mickey - Guitar and vocals, and yours truly on Violin (yes, the other me, a wannabe folk rock fiddler), testing out my new fiddle. It went too quick... already looking forward to next year...
When was the last time you made a drastic change to your personal style (i.e., wardrobe, hairstyle, etc.)? What did you do?
